How do you know if you are working with a good breeder?
When you purchase a puppy from an established, ethical breeder, you are investing in the future of a breed you love, just as they do. Good breeders are heavily vested in the puppies they produce because they primarily breed for the future of the breed and every litter bred is with hopes of keeping something special to carry on to the next generation. They are the guardians of their breed, raising the bar every generation, competing not just with their fellow breeders & exhibitors in the ring, but with their own personal best in all aspects of the breed. They are educated & passionate about blood lines and pedigrees and the characteristics that follow along with those pedigrees along with experienced knowledge of all aspects of “The Breed Standard” and inherited health conditions.

The only two legitimate registries in the United States for the Cavalier, are the American Kennel Club (AKC) of which the parent breed club is the American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club (ACKCSC). The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club-USA (CKCSC-USA ), the original breed club and registry of the Cavalier in the United States). Those breeders are devoted to their breed and voluntarily donate time & money to participate in, or to put on, Championship shows, club activities, public educational events, breed specific education, seminars and National & International educational panels. These are the people who donate to the Charitable Trust to fund genetic research & target breed associated health problems. They also participate and donate to the Cavalier Rescue which often take in dogs from unethical back yard breeders or puppy mills to give those special babies a fighting chance at a new life.
Good breeders will have an established registered affix,(not all affixes are registered) which is an earned stamp or brand, which every puppy bred will carry at the front of their name,( in our case “Covington”). All puppies born, will be registered, regardless as to weather they end up as a beloved pet or a show dog. Pedigrees will be legitimate, carry dogs with proof of parentage DNA on file, and carry affixes only from other equally vested ethical breeders. Puppies will be predictable in breed characteristics & temperament and those breeders will take their time determining which puppies they keep for themselves & those they decide to place in loving forever pet homes. (As much as they’d like to keep them all) the placement of the right puppy for the right home is imperative. These breeders will patiently choose the right homes for their puppies.

Puppies won't leave for new homes sooner than 12 weeks (National Club Code of Ethics prohibits any puppy leaving for a new home before 10 weeks, recommends 12 weeks) or even older. Puppies will have a written guarantee & spay/neuter contract & will always be welcomed back if in need of a home their relationship extends to the new owner for the life of the puppy as a friend and resource.

Their websites will be breed specific informational & educational. They will showcase their Special dogs, some Title holders & demonstrate their commitment to the breed. They will guide you on how you can purchase a puppy from the right type of breeder, whether or not they have puppies available at the time along with their process for placing them.
You will not only be welcome in their homes, but requested to visit to meet them and their dogs, and them you. You will find they have as many questions for you as you do for them. You will likely only find these breeders listed on the National & Regional Cavalier clubs websites breeder or puppy referral lists. You will find them at shows, breed education events and through referrals from people that they have worked with.

You will not find puppies from reputable breeders in pet shops, or advertised in any classifieds ads or mass marketing web sites. You wont find puppies from reputable breeders being sold out in parking lots out of the backs of cars nor through the “broker” middle man brokers. You will not r find these puppies or adults in rescue because these breeders will require by contract that their puppies come back to them for the life of the dog if they can no longer be cared for by the owner or their designee. Their websites are not used to sell our puppies such as sites featuring photo after photo of puppies with cute names currently for sale. None of which carry a registered affix. These aforementioned places are where you will find the back yard breeders, puppy mills & brokers.
Covington is a long time committed & vested breeder of the Cavalier. We still enjoy the occasional litter during the year & our puppies are raised as part of our family. We don't force weaning of Mothers & babies unless necessary, we let Moms handle that naturally as Cavaliers mature slowly and the more time they have learning from their Mothers& littermates the better. Our puppies are not raised in wire pend and are using a doggy door by 8 weeks which makes house breaking in your home easy, even if you don’t have a doggy door. Puppies will be current on CORE puppy vaccinations appropriate for age and you will receive all records and future schedule for both vaccines and worming. Your puppy will be microchipped and you will receive a written wellness exam from a veterinarian. We will discuss all aspects of Cavalier ownership with you on your visit including health concerns & history specific to your puppy and happy to show you the most current health clearances on the parents (see- Breed Info page - for health information-). All registrations and ownership transfers for your puppy are included and will be completed & paid for by us. We just want you to enjoy & focus on getting settled with your new family member, we will take care of the rest.
